Takaki's view:
The lotus flower symbolizes "spiritual awakening" by the Buddhists.  It is the world outside the window.
The lotus flower puts the root in the mud pool, and makes the flower bloom. The flower (artwork) grows from the artist's mud pool (a larger Idea) respectively. The lotus flower doesn't bloom if the mud pool doesn't exist even if the mud pool is very deep, and despair has been filled. The lotus flower is a fragment of the mud pool and a "Small Ray of Hope".
